Black Hole Giants

چکیده

We investigate giant and dual giant type BPS configurations in the nearhorizon geometry of a certain 1 16 -BPS AdS5 black hole. By quantising the space of solutions we count the dual giant configurations and compare with the black hole entropy. This suggests a missing degeneracy factor which we argue comes from an angular momentum quantum number. From the D-brane world volume this arises from BPS electromagnetic waves. We study these waves in the context of giants and dual giants in the black hole near-horizon geometry. We further demonstrate that turning on waves on the world-volume of 1 8 -BPS dual giants in AdS5× S5 leads to 1 16 -BPS states with an additional angular momentum quantum number.

We consider the origin of the so–called S stars orbiting the supermassive black hole at the very center of the Galaxy. These are usually assumed to be massive main–sequence stars. We argue instead that they are the remnants of low–to– intermediate mass red giants which have been scattered on to near–radial orbits and tidally stripped as they approach the central black hole. Such stars retain on...

Red giant stellar collisions in the Galactic Centre

We show that collisions with stellar–mass black holes can partially explain the absence of bright giant stars in the Galactic Centre, first noted by Genzel et al. (1996). We show that the missing objects are low–mass giants and AGB stars in the range 1 − 3M⊙. Using detailed stellar evolution calculations, we find that to prevent these objects from evolving to become visible in the depleted K ba...

At the horizon of a supersymmetric AdS5 black hole: Isometries and half-BPS giants

The near-horizon geometry of an asymptotically AdS5 supersymmetric black hole discovered by Gutowski and Reall is analysed. After lifting the solution to 10 dimensions, we explicitly solve the Killing spinor equations in both Poincaré and global coordinates. It is found that exactly four supersymmetries are preserved which is twice the number for the full black hole. The full set of isometries ...

Quasistars: Accreting black holes inside massive envelopes

We study the structure and evolution of “quasistars,” accreting black holes embedded within massive hydrostatic gaseous envelopes. These configurations may model the early growth of supermassive black hole seeds. The accretion rate onto the black hole adjusts so that the luminosity carried by the convective envelope equals the Eddington limit for the total mass, M∗ + MBH ≈ M∗. This greatly exce...
